Definition of Sea Ice terms and Nomenclature in XML language IICWG-III, DNMI, Tromso, 14-16.11.2001 Vasily Smolyanitsky, Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute & JCOMM Expert Team on Sea Ice

A.Agenda items: 6.5 “JCOMM products bulletin” (6. MARINE METEOROLOGICAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICES), 7.4 “Infrastructure” (7. Data Management), et.al. In particular 7.4 states: “Marine research, marine operational services, global climate studies, and commercial oceanographic data gathering all require an inter-operable means of exchanging data with a consistent metadata language. In particular, there is an opportunity to develop a system that allows all types of agencies and organizations to contribute data and use data products with common metadata criteria. EuroGOOS Members have considered the advantages of a marine consortium of XML, and have corresponded with other agencies on this matter. EuroGOOS requests JCOMM to charge an appropriate subsidiary body to examine the requirements for and value of a marine version of XML, and to mandate this body to coordinate WMO/IOC input to an XML Marine Consortium, if the analysis is favourable” B. JCOMM WORK PLAN for 2001-2005, Data Management Programme Area, Para 7.4.32, ET on Ocean Data Management: Define the ocean metedata requirements, analyse the value of Extensible Markup Language (XML) in coordination with parallel work within CBS and, if appropriate, coordinate WMO/IOC input to the development of the necessary codes and procedures within a Marine XML Consortium. XML in JCOMM-I documents:

A.WMO Sea Ice Nomenclature (WMO – 259, Geneva, 1970), English and Russian versions, placed in MS ACCESS database Presently DB can be easily converted into other DB. Following fields were used: Item number Item nesting Term (Variable, Detailed-Variable, Detailed-Variable2, etc.) Term (Variable) definition B. CSS-table on the basis of Australian IODE Marine XML glossary prepared. C. Javascript implementing SQL access to Database generating XML output was written. D. Both DataBase and JavaScript interface were placed at GDSIDB page and can be accessed by URL: http://www.aari.nw.ru/gdsidb/XML/si_xml.asp E. Draft Sea Ice nomenclature in XML format sent to Australian IODE with intention of further inclusion into Marine XML glossary Further steps after JCOMM-I:

Draft view of Sea Ice Nomenclature as XML rendered by MS Explorer

Suggestions: A. Further collaboration with IICWG in that direction. B. Extend DB with the following fields: - scale, accuracy if applicable - identifier of given parameter on ice chart in given format (SIGRID, SIGRID2, SIGRID3…) - Other languages - ? C. Collaborative efforts with other JCOMM ET and IODE in construction of Marine XML Glossary Current version will be published at GDSIDB page: http://www.aari.nw.ru/gdsidb/XML/
