Unit 8 Seminar LS504, Applied Action Research
2
Looking Ahead: Unit 9 Writing Assignment Review “Steps of the Applied Research Process,” in Doc Sharing. The steps are:
3
Steps of Applied Research Process 1.Problem Statement/Identification 2.Literature Review 3.Data Collection / Program Implementation 4.Data Analysis 5.Summary/Conclusion/Recommendations for solution
4
Looking Ahead: Unit 9 writing assignment Your final assignment for this course will be a 5-7 page prospectus, or proposed plan, for the work that you will do in LS698 for your applied research project. This assignment will also include your discussion of an existing research project and the methods employed therein.
5
Looking Ahead: Unit 9 writing assignment First, review the Unit 3 Web reading, Lisa Siewert’s “The Effects of Written Teacher Feedback on the Academic Achievement of Fifth-Grade Students with Learning Challenges.” Pay particular attention to the following sections of that article: 1 & 2. Problem Statement/Introduction/ Literature Review (pages 17-20)
6
Steps of Applied Research 3. Method / Data Collection/Program Implementation (pages 20-23) 4. Data Analysis/Results (pages 23-24) 5. Summary/Recommendations (pages 24-26)
7
Unit 9 assignment Part One: Summarize Siewert’s data collection, data analysis, program implementation, and program evaluation. In other words, what did Siewert do for each of these steps? This section of your paper should be approximately 2-3 pages.
8
Unit 9 assignment Part Two: In this part, you will present your plan for the work that you will do in LS698 for your applied research project. 1. In your introduction, present the revised/edited version of your problem statement 2.In your introduction, provide a brief overview that includes the major steps of your plan, your targeted population group, and a brief overview of your data collection and analysis plans.
9
Unit 9 assignment 3. In the body of your plan, be sure to explain the anticipated impact of your problem-solving plan and why your targeted population group represents a reasonable sample for research purposes. In the body of your plan, work to apply several of the data collection and analysis methods discussed in the course and in your textbook (including, but not limited to qualitative interviews, focus groups, surveys, observation, case study research, use of secondary data, considerations of validity / reliability).
10
Unit 9 assignment 4. In the body of your plan, explain in detail what steps you will take for your applied research project to complete your data collection, data analysis, problem-solving program implementation, and program evaluation in LS698. As you discuss how you would evaluate the success of your program, explain how you would measure success quantitatively and/or qualitatively.
11
Unit 9 assignment 5. In the body of your plan, be sure to explain the anticipated impact of your problem- solving plan and why your targeted population group represents a reasonable sample for research purposes.
12
Unit 9 assignment Your planned methods and analysis may be quite different from Siewert’s, and that’s fine. You should not be engaging in comparing and contrasting your methods with hers. Instead, use Siewert’s article as an example to learn from as you design your own plan for Part Two of this assignment. Part Two of your paper should be 4-5 pages.
13
Steps of Applied Research Look at the “Youth Engagement” article, by Swaner and White 1. Where is the Introduction/Problem Statement Section?
14
Steps of Applied Research Project 2. Where is the Literature Review? 3. Where is Data Collection / Program Implementation? 4. Where is Data Analysis? 5. Where is the Summary/Evaluation/Recommendations section?
15
Data Collection Identify instances of data collection in the Red Hook study. How is data collected? What information does it give?
