5 1828-1860 DEMOCRATIC-REPUBLICANS SPLIT INTO: DEMOCRATIC-REPUBLICANS AND JACKSONIAN- DEMOCRATS Populism Spoils System

6 WHIG PARTY 1836 Industry Plantation Owners feel a need for power and impact

7 PHASE 3: SLAVERY 1850 Democratic split into northern and southern camps Whig party breaks up and absorbed by NEW Republican 1854 party that opposed slavery. (Lincoln was a Republican)

8 PHASE 4: 1896-1932 Republican Party Splits: But maintains control of the policy Regular Republicans (Taft) Progressives (Teddy)

9 Phase 5: 1932-1968 Democratic Control: Yet Deep division among the ranks. Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam War saw a country divided.

10 WE END UP WITH… DEMOCRATS= REPUBLICANS (GRAND OLD PARTY)=

11 AND…LIBERALS individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power (especially of government and religion), the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports free private enterprise

12 AND…CONSERVATIVES favors free markets, traditional values strong foreign defense. The term derives from to conserve; from Latin conservāre, "to keep, guard, observe". Some seek to preserve the status quo, while others seek to return to the values of an earlier time.
