TREATY OF PARIS – December 20, 1898 Cuba is independent Spain cedes Guam and Puerto Rico to America Spain cedes Philippines to U.S. in exchange for $20 million PLATT AMENDMENT – 1901 Provides for the conditions of U.S. troop withdrawal from Cuba Cuba can never sign a treaty with a foreign power reducing its freedom Cuba can never build up excessive debt U.S. has right to intervene to preserve independence U.S. has right to intervene to preserve law and order U.S. can have a naval base (Guantanamo) Cuba reluctantly agrees, U.S. troops leave, Cuba becomes a protectorate
