2 Foods from the rainforest For centuries rainforest products have been transported around the world, though we normally forget when we buy products with sugar, rubber or chocolate in. Over 1,227,000 tones of cocoa beans are transported every year to make chocolate and other products. We also get lots of spices from the place as well as 25% of European medicines coming from the forest. Click here to go back to homepage

3 Rainforest animals The rainforest covers 2% of the earths surface but holds half the life on the planet. The toucan is a bright coloured bird that has a huge beak that it uses to pierce holes in fruit. The fidler crab burrows in mangrove swamps. Males have one huge claw. This is used to catch food and attract females. The common lancehead is a nocturnal snake that senses its prey with heat sensitive eyes. When it catches a scent its fangs swing forwards puncturing the skin and injecting lethal venom. Click here to go to homepage

4 Rainforest Destruction Every minute, 100 acres of tropical rainforest are destroyed. In south America forests are cleared for beef. The number of cattle rose from 1 million in 1970 to 5.5 million in 1985, so who knows how many there are now. There are 18,000 species of orchid found in the rainforest. They are collected illegally, but could face extinction in the wild. They are worth a lot of money and people still collect them despite the laws. 5 Destruction poem The forest sat miserably as if it was not loved, The wind rattled around, lonely, lost. The rain gurgled as if stuck, The fire is coming, coming, coming! The trees grumbled, injured, Leaves flying madly around. Sap drizzling down holes, Trying to find a safe home. The wind coughed, full of cold, Moaning in despair. Can’t say a word, throat hurts, Been jeered by the rays. Click to Go back slide
