2. English as a Second Language The ESL Department services over 1000 students representing over 56 different languages and dialects. Due to the large number of language groups represented in the Mobile County Public Schools, a Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) approach has been selected for serving English learners.

English as a Second Language The regular classroom teacher provides instruction that simultaneously introduces both language and content with a focus on content rather than the English language itself. Support is provided by the ESL teacher or paraprofessional and to the extent feasible, in the native language of the student.

4. English as a Second Language The core language acquisition program of MCPSS is Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) through the effective implementation of Tier I instruction utilizing the Cycle of Instruction Model.

7. WIDA Standards Alabama is a member of the WIDA Consortium. The World-Class Instructional Design Assessment Consortium (WIDA) is a consortium of 27 states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English learners. The WIDA standards encompass: Social and instructional language usage The language of Language Arts The language of Mathematics The language of Science The language of Social Studies

10. ESL Needs Assessment SY 2012-2013 Our focus area this year is literacy in the secondary setting. Specific attention will be on the AHSGE in reading and students in the middle school setting.

11. ESL Needs Assessment SY 2012-2013 Of the 13 middle schools serving ELs, 4 did not make AMAO-A and 4 did not make AMAO-B. If you have an EL teacher in your elementary or high school that also serves a middle school that is not proficient, be prepared for them to concentrate services on that middle school.

EL Staff in Your School Teachers may be more transient this year School assignments have been set for this year- any questions or concerns, contact Mrs. Jay Teacher schedules will not be set until a few weeks after school starts and all students have been identified and screened- again all schedules are assigned based on greatest need and are fluid
