2 Who am I? Alastair Fairfull 20 years in SEBD special schools 8 years as LA SEN Adviser Currently your AfA Achievement Coach (AF just read the bit from David Laws speech to the North of England Education conference, 16th Jan 2014 to prove we are at the cutting edge)

3 Two Groups 1. Be two groups of three 2. TASK: Write down the top 5 most effective teaching influences/methods (that produce the biggest effects on learning). 2 minutes only

4 Session Contents…. Practical stuff…… 1.Create TACs- done that- but what is it?! 2.Watch Video about ‘evidence-based’ teaching (EBT) 3.Choose one technique 4.Learn a bit about it ……..all in just over one hour

6 Evidence Based Teaching John Hattie- Visible Learning part 1 There are 138 influences- watch the video to see his cogent discussion of what doesn’t work- we don’t have time now. John Hattie- Visible Learning part 2 The rest is about Teaching methods that work. We are going to choose ONE.

9 Teachers’ Action Cooperative (because traditional CPD does not result in change- remembering open plan classrooms) Only teachers can change teaching Changing teaching is itself a learning process (always striving for outstanding learning) Learning requires: a challenge, opportunity to practice, feedback on success, support to continue and/to improve.

10 TAC Process 1.Decide on skill to develop (challenge) a)Use Active Learning this time 2.Practice on own a)we all make mistakes and learn from them- 10 times to be confident 3.Invite a member of TAC to observe 4.Discuss the observation (Feedback) 5.Feedback to larger Group (19.03.2014) 6.Decide on next most effective ‘EBT’ strategy
