6 TPR James Archer – language learning starts with understanding and ends with production Babies spend many months listening before speaking Students will begin to speak, though with many errors, and will gradually become more target-like

7 TPR Characteristics Meaning over form Listening from day one; Ss do not speak right away T’s input is i+1, advanced of the Ss but understandable (Low) Affective Filter – anxiety is reduced, self confidence ^ What are some things we can do to help students in this regard?

8 TPR Principles Reduce stress Teacher is director Ss will be ready to speak 10-20 hours after instruction Fours steps T models T combines commands to create flexibility Ss learn to read and write commands Ss issue commands (expand later with games, etc.)

9 Remember… Interaction depends on the situation Sometimes T speaks, sometimes T is non-verbal The L1 can be used to introduce TPR but is seldom used afterwards Don’t introduce commands too quickly Help students feel successful by mastering ~3 at a time
