Learning Targets Identify elements of a narrative by recording evidence of setting, characterization, dialogue, and conflict. Sequence a text’s events chronologically in an outline.

To help you recognize narrative elements, your teacher will show you a scene from The Lion King or another film. As you watch, take notes in the spaces provided. (Please read and record your work in the table in your workbook). Descriptions of Setting (give specific details) Characterization (use adjectives or nouns to describe how the characters are feeling) Important Dialogue (try to copy words and phrases) Conflict (give specific details)

Think back to the film: 2. What external conflicts did you see between characters? (external- character struggles with an outside force) 3. What internal conflict did you see within a character? (Internal- character struggles with his/her own needs or emotions).

Check your Understanding Think of a story that you know well. Describe the story using the language you have just learned: characters, setting, sequence of events, and conflict.

Example Cinderella is the main character of the story “Cinderella.” Minor characters are Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters and her fairy godmother. The main conflict of the story is external, between Cinderella and her stepmother and stepsisters. The setting is Cinderella’s home and the royal palace. Some events in a sequence are: Cinderella is introduced in the kitchen, cleaning the hearth. The royal invitation to the Prince’s ball is delivered. The stepsisters and stepmother make preparations to go to the ball. Cinderella is left out of the preparations. The fairy godmother dresses and transports Cinderella to the royal ball.

Narrative Writing Prompt Imagine that you are one of the characters and you want to tell a friend part of the story. Write a narrative of what happened there from your point of view. Use pronouns correctly as you write using first person point of view. Describe the conflict, setting, and sequence of events of the incident. Include details of your character’s feelings and dialogue.
