Details about setting also create a mood in short stories. Writers use: –Strong verbs –Adjectives –Adverbs –Metaphors and similes. Descriptive language can transform a setting, for example: PLAIN: “The girl was scared to go into the attic.” SCARY: “The trembling girl cautiously inched up the ladder to the shadowy attic.”

Use the Sense and Sensibility section of your Writer’s Toolkit (Handout 3.1a) for extra help. 4.Try out your ideas on your climax scene. Use similes and metaphors as well. 5.Save your work with a filename that includes your name and today’s date. 6.Upload your draft in the Online Classroom under the Step 3 activity, Submit Your Draft Scene.
