Copy the following statements and finish them in your own words… “I revised my thesis statement by doing ________.” “My thesis statement is now stronger because ______________.”

II Finish critiquing group thesis statements Now, write your own thesis statement for the Narrative “I Matter” essay prompt. 5 Friday, 29 August 2014 Agenda: What’s Your Learning Target? Body Paragraph Workshop---(see below) 1.) To support your thesis statement, begin work on your body paragraphs by writing the following phrase under your thesis… “I believe I’m right because…” 2.) Then finish the sentence with the reason you feel you are right. This will come from your own experiences. 3.) Do this three times. HW: Enjoy your holiday this Monday! Honor Labor!

6 Body Paragraph Workshop--- 4.) Next, cross out the phrase “I believe I’m right because…” 5.) This is your claim or your topic sentence! 6.) This is how you will begin your body paragraph. 7.) Now let’s make a “body paragraph sandwich.”

7 “Body Paragraph Sandwich” Layers Claim/topic sentence: Claim/topic sentence: This begins & focuses your body paragraph Evidence: Evidence: Your own examples/personal anecdotes Commentary: Commentary: Explain how this relates to your point Analysis: Analysis: Use something like---“This relates to Holt’s article because…”

Explain/develop each example! Tie back to thesis 1 Sentence

9 USING EVIDENCE & EXAMPLES Summarize: Well known, general, factual information General story lines from a book Events in a narrative Paraphrase:Specific ideas or events from a text Specific factual information Quote:Extracted words or ideas that belong to the author Paraphrasing and quoting must have a parenthetical citation!

10 Peer-Edit Your Body Paragraphs Get into groups of 3-4 Share your body paragraphs with each member of your group Each member needs to: Read your paragraphs Comment on how clear or unclear they are Comment on how well they connect to Holt’s article Correct spelling and punctuation Offer two comments for EACH paragraph--- 1.)
