Based on the slides, describe the and define the terms below. Define & Describe The Southern Colonies Maryland Virginia Bacon’s Rebellion The Carolinas Georgia Changes in the Southern Colonies EQ : What factors influenced the development of the Southern Colonies? 25
3
The Southern Colonies The Southern colonies (MD, VA, NC, SC, GA), had a warm climate which was perfect to grow tobacco, rice, indigo and raise cattle. The plantations were the large farms that required many workers and slaves to help maintain them.
4
The Southern Colonies The farms further inland, however, would grow only what they needed to feed their families. – Even though there were more farms than plantations, the plantations owners had more political power.
5
Maryland In 1632, King Charles I gave a charter to George Calvert who was Catholic and wanted tolerance – Maryland was to be safe for ALL Christians His son, Lord Baltimore created a representative government – He created the Act of Toleration in 1649 to welcome ALL Christians, allow them all to vote and hold office.
6
Virginia Virginia had a rough start due to diseases, but the population increased after gaining immunity to them – Naturally, the Native Americans were not happy with that Bacon’s Rebellion – – The wealthy colonists had all of the good land, while the poor had bad land or none at all. They had to move inland on Native American land – Nathaniel Bacon collected 1,000 people to kill the natives – The governor called him a rebel, and Bacon responded by destroying Jamestown. – The rebellion ended when he died after becoming sick

Bacon’s Rebellion
8
The Carolinas North Carolina – Had no harbors or rivers, so it relied on growing tobacco and making lumber South Carolina – Excellent weather for growing sugar – People from Barbados came over with slaves to help grow sugar and rice = caused an increase in demand for slavery – Charleston eventually became the biggest city in the Southern Colonies
9
Georgia The 1 st reason Georgia was made a colony was to prevent the Spanish from colonizing northward, and to be a barrier for wars The 2 nd reason, according to James Oglethorpe, it should be a safe haven for anyone with debt. – Georgia had small farms, no plantations, and slavery was outlawed until the 1750’s.
10
Change in the Southern Colonies The Tidewater Region – Plantations were made for cotton, rice, sugar and tobacco – The working conditions were unhealthy, humid and hot, so an increase in slavery began – More slaves entering the Southern Colonies caused two changes in society: There were more slaves than slave owners The rich white men were getting richer and the poor white men were getting poorer The Backcountry – Mainly composed of small farms. The land was often not owned legally. Few slaves and servants. – Those in the backcountry felt like they were being left out of important matters and were forgotten
