Chemistry II Chapter 8 Review Symbols for chemical equations, , (aq), etc. Balance equations using coefficients, which indicate the # of moles of each substance. Activity Series – orders the elements by the ease with which they react. (top is highest!) Replacement reactions occurring increases as the interval between any two elements increases.

Chemistry II Chapter 8 Review A + X = AX synthesis A + BX  AX + B single-displacement AX + BY  AY + BX double-displacement AX  A + X decomposition Combustion – releases heat and light Electrolysis – decomposition of water Oxides of active metals, such as CaO, react with water to form metal hydroxides.

Chemistry II Chapter 8 Review Chemical equation – uses symbols and formulas to represent the names and amounts of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Word equations/formula equations are qualitative but no info regarding amounts. Chemical equations show amounts. Why we balance equations. (L of C of M)

Chemistry II Chapter 8 Review Indications for chemical reactions – energy and color changes, precipitation, gassing/fizzing. Word equations Formula equations (remember the diatomics!) Calcium carbonate = CaCO 3 Balancing equations

Chemistry II Chapter 8 Review Using activity series of the elements H 2 O – use HOH
