COUNTING BOOKS Limitless possibilities for finding interesting ways for children to explore the world of numbers.
2
IMPORTANCE/USES help children make the transition from concrete to visual representation of numbers offer children a chance to participate in counting add an element of fun and pleasure to mathematical concepts often use math within a framework of other subjects, multiple concepts introduced
3
CHARACTERISTICS Present numerical accumulation of objects May tell a story Sometimes reverse concept of addition. Example: subtraction by deletion, multiplication, division Books for younger children cover 1-10, older children may go up to 1,000 Some address time, days, months, etc.
4
Often include puzzles or numerals embedded in the illustrations Sometimes use rhyme or alliteration to add interest Some books classified as such serve a dual purpose, such as teaching a concept, even celebrating nature, or introducing new information
5
HOW TO EVALUATE Do the objects to be counted stand out on the page? How effective is the page design? Are concepts and illustrations easily understandable and appropriate for the intended age? Are illustrations consistent?
6
Are questions/instructions clear or confusing? Are mathematical concepts presented in interesting, beautiful, unique, and/or pleasurable ways? Do the illustrations provide an effective and appropriate interpretation of the concepts?
