2  1848 saw the first North American gold rush in California.  Most gold rushers arrived all of the gold producing area had been claimed and few made themselves rich.

3  Late 1857 a HBC trader arrived in Fort Victoria with some gold he had panned from the Thompson river.  News travelled fast and the first 450 miners arrived from San Francisco on April 25 th 1858.  By the end of that summer 10,000 miners were working on the Thompson and Fraser rivers.

4  James Douglas was extremely concerned about the influx of Americans.  The British government shared his concern and created the new crown colony of British Columbia.
