1848 saw the first North American gold rush in California. Most gold rushers arrived all of the gold producing area had been claimed and few made themselves rich.

Late 1857 a HBC trader arrived in Fort Victoria with some gold he had panned from the Thompson river. News travelled fast and the first 450 miners arrived from San Francisco on April 25 th 1858. By the end of that summer 10,000 miners were working on the Thompson and Fraser rivers.

James Douglas was extremely concerned about the influx of Americans. The British government shared his concern and created the new crown colony of British Columbia.
