1
Why are the properties of mixtures and fluids and their uses important to us?
2
Matter is anything has mass and takes up space (has volume) What is matter?
3
Matter is anything has mass and takes up space (has volume) There are three different states or phases of matter: What is matter?

7
In order to understand further the properties of these phases, you need to get down to the particle level. The Particle Model of Matter
8
The particle model has 3 key ideas: The Particle Model of Matter
9
The particle model has 3 key ideas: 1)All substances are made up of tiny particles. The Particle Model of Matter

The particle model has 3 key ideas: 1)All substances are made up of tiny particles. 2)The particles are always in motion. They will move faster as energy is added or slow down as energy is taken away. The Particle Model of Matter

The particle model has 3 key ideas: 1)All substances are made up of tiny particles. 2)The particles are always in motion. They will move faster as energy is added or slow down as energy is taken away. 3)The particles are always colliding. Actually, there are 2 more key ideas but we’ll get to those later… The Particle Model of Matter
13
Solids Particles are tightly packed and moving with mainly a vibrational motion. Very low energy. Applying the Particle Model to Phases of Matter
14
Liquids Particles are vibrating and rotating and so there are bigger spaces between them. The particles don’t form rigid clumps which is why they take the shape of the container they are in. Applying the Particle Model to Phases of Matter
15
Gases Particles have very high energy and so have rotational, vibrational and translational movement. There are large spaces between the particles. Applying the Particle Model to Phases of Matter
16
As the particles gain or lose energy, they move closer or further apart. This change in energy results in changes of state. Fill in diagram… Changes of State
