1 The Organelle Trail Project..
Giddy-Yup Pardners!

2 You’ve just been made a U.S. Marshall!
Grab yer hat and saddle the broncs! It’s time to head down the Organelle Trail. You’ve just been made a U.S. Marshall! Your job is to gather all of the information you can about a wanted organelle. At the end of this cybertrail, you will need to whip up a wanted poster to show to the other U.S. Marshalls in your camp (so that they will know to look for your wanted organelle too!)

3 Part 2: Gather Your Facts
Part 1: First Duties Receive your assignment and team. Part 2: Gather Your Facts To complete your poster (and find your suspect!), you will need to know the following: CRIME: What has this organelle done? Why is this organelle "wanted"? In other words, what does it do for the cell? Or, what is the organelle’s function? PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: What does the organelle look like? Provide a description and an actual picture. The picture can be a mug shot (printed picture) or a sketch from a sketch artist (hand drawn). LOCATION: Where should we look for the organelle? Which of the following types of cells is this organelle found in? Make sure that you have explored plants and animal cells. ACCOMPLICES: In other words, which other organelles/structures help your organelle do its job?

4 Part 3: The Roundup Share the information you have discovered by completing a wanted poster. The poster should include, but is not limited to: 1. A picture of your organelle/structure (drawn or taken from a web site or book) 2. Answers (in your own words!) to all 4 items in part 2 3. Three resources cited (just the name of the book or website link is fine) on the back of your poster 4. You are encouraged to be creative – decorate your poster, make it look old. For ideas or help in making your wanted poster visit the following website ( ). Remember the more effort and creative your poster is the better chance of getting full credit.

5 Getting Started Here is a brief list of places to help you get started. These is not the only places to look for your organelles! (Book, Organelle Webquest are others) ·Cell Organelle Table – A table listing organelles, their location, description, and their function. · Virtual Tour of a Cell – Visit this site tour a plant or animal cell. Click on the individual organelles to see a description of each. · Spongelab Cell – Take a virtual tour of the structures inside plant and animal cells

6 Organelles Selections:
Nucleus, Cell membrane, Cell wall, Cytoplasm, Chloroplast, Vacuole, Mitochondria, Lysosome, Ribosome, Golgi bodies (apparatus), Endoplasmic Reticulum, Chromosome

7 The Organelle Trail Rubric
Rookie (1) Apprentice (2) Expert (3) Total Creativity No effort on creativity or connection to the “Wanted” theme Some effort on creativity or connection to the “Wanted” theme Excellent effort on creativity or connection to the “Wanted” theme Used Own Words Students did not use their own words Students used mostly their own words Students clearly synthesized information in their own words Accuracy and thoroughness The four assigned questions were not answered. Classmates will need other resources to include this organelle in their big projects Questions answered somewhat, but not completely All the four questions were answered thoroughly. Visuals The student did not use visuals in their poster or the visuals are unrelated to the organelle The students used visuals, but they are rushed or unclear The students used a visual and its purpose is clear. Resources We had to cite resources? Students cited one resource. Students cited two or more resources

8 Gold Found Near Cell Town!
The mayor of Cell Town has decided to hold a job fair for all the organelle misfits. Your job is to visit each wanted poster and decide who to hire for each job. The success of Cell city is in your hands! In order to successfully complete the round-up you must present a written explanation to the Mayor (this is individual work).

9 Rubric Organelle Trail Round-Up
Rookie (1) Apprentice (2) Expert (3) Cell structures included Less than 80% of the items that need to be identified are present and have analogies and/or it is not clear which analogies goes with which item. Almost all items (80-90%) that need to be identified are present and have an analogy. It is clear which analogy goes with which structure. Every item that needs to be identified is present and has an analogy. It is clear which analogy goes with which structure. Cellular Functions Fewer than 80% of the cellular functions are correct and/or are included in with the analogy statement. Almost all (80-90%) cellular functions are correct and are included in with the analogy statement. All cellular functions are correct and are included in with the analogy statement. Appropriate analogy Fewer than 80% of the analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. 80-90% of the analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. All analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. Structure/ Function Fewer than 80% of your structure/function descriptions are clear and/or original. 80-90% of your structure/function descriptions are clear and/or original. You communicated a clear and original description of how all of the organelles’ functions match their structures.
