4. Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF, is a non-toxic, clear solution made up of purified water and 32.5% automotive-grade urea. It is neither flammable nor combustible. It is used as the reducing agent for SCR systems. Toxic NOx emissions are reduced into nitrogen, water, and carbon dioxide. 4

5.  Not a fuel additive.  Separate tank for DEF onboard truck – 23 gallon tank for over the road trucks.  Injection rate approx 3% for every gallon of diesel, or approx 300 miles for every gallon of DEF consumed. 5

6.  SCR is the onboard system on the vehicle. A complex system made up of the DEF tank, hoses/tubing, pumps, sensors, injectors…all computer controlled.  The computer constantly monitors the NOx emissions and adjusts the amount of DEF that gets injected into the exhaust stream. 6

7.  Truck has a DEF gauge, just like a fuel gauge.  If DEF solution gets too low and the driver doesn’t replenish, the NOx sensors will pick up the higher concentrations.  The computer will then inform the driver to replenish the DEF or perform maintenance….1000mi or 12hrs  7
