WRITING SENTENCES USING CONTEXT CLUES Context Clues: Using clues in a sentence/paragraph to figure out what a word means.

Assignment You will be writing a sentence using each vocabulary word on our list. That is a total of 22 sentences. The Rules:  Must be able to tell what the word means from the sentence.  You may use more than one sentence to show what a word means.  You can’t just give the definition in a sentence.  You may change part of speech or tense, if done correctly!  Underline the vocabulary word in your sentence.

Rule 1:Use Context The Rule: be able to tell what the word means from the sentence. WRONG: integrity  I have integrity. Right:  TJ showed a great deal of integrity when he returned the lost wallet to the lost and found.

Rule 2: Use More Than One Sentence Rule 2: You may use more than one sentence. Example: integrity  The Joes have a lot of integrity. They have integrity because they never tell a lie. Notice that I don’t say that they are honest. That would be using the definition too closely.

Rule 3: Don’t just say the definition. Rule 3: You cannot write the definition in the sentence. WRONG: integrity  Sahely has integrity because she is honest. RIGHT:  Sahely showed integrity the other day because she told the truth to her friend.

Rule 4: Change part of speech or tense. Rule 4: You may change the part of speech or tense. Example: impute: to assign blame.  Ricky Bobby was imputed for the bad grade on the group assignment because he did nothing. Another Example: sagacity(noun): good judgment  As a noun: Mario had the sagacity not to fight Bowser for once so he would survive.  As an adjective: Mario was sagacious because he decided not to fight Bowser and risk death.

TIP If you are struggling, try to write a sentence using a simpler definition of the word. Next, simply switch the word. For example: integrity(noun): honesty In the beginning of Empire Lucious Lyon does not show honesty because he lies to his family. Switch the word. In the beginning of Empire Lucious Lyon does not show integrity because he lies to his family.
