M ODEL OF SELF DEVELOPMENT A technique that is widely practiced to enhance self development is johari window. It was developed by “Joseph Luft” amd “Harrington ”. 1)The Open Self: The information that you know about yourself and that others also know. The obvious things, e.g. race, name, height, weight, etc. Things you tell others when you introduce yourself. All the info. you want others to know 2)The Blind Self: Information that others know about you, but you don’t know about yourself. Examples: “You’re a good listener!” “You snore.” You are really charismatic about things!” We may feel that we are not a good listener or talker, but our friends may feel differently
10
M ODEL OF SELF DEVELOPMENT 3)The Hidden Self Contains all that information that we don’t want others to know about us. Closet of feelings, insecurities, and not-so- great experiences, the private information 4) The Unknown Self: Information that you don’t know and others don’t know. Could be abilities and potentials that you have not discovered about yourself yet Example: You could be an amazing Public Relations Rep, or Guidance Counselor but you just wouldn’t know that yet.
11
M ODEL OF SELF DEVELOPMENT The purpose of using johari window in self development is to enlarge the open self and reduce the blind spots, the hidden self and encroach the unknown self

IMPORTANCE OF SELF DEVELOPMETN Importance of self development are as follows: 1) Inculcate Positive Thinking: The self evolved person with positive thinking can write creatively because authentic creativity needs our transcendence(going beyond the limits of ordinary experience) of negative emotions and identification with petty objects. Such transcendence, detachment and non identification are attained through self development 2) Helps to create Harmonious relationships: Self developed individual can get along with people harmoniously. The conflicts which take place in our daily life are more because of our inside conflicts, unconscious behavior and identification with narrow ends, The self developed people can feel harmony with others as they accept the unique existence and nature of every individual. They do not try to dominate others as
13
IMPORTANCE OF SELF DEVELOPMETN they are not dominated by this desire. They exercise power by remaining powerless and prove useful through their apparent uselessness. 3) Cultivate Trust: Self development paves the way towards synergistic cooperation. Communication in organization is ineffective because of lack of trust and cooperation among employees. Self development cultivates trust not in the person himself but also among the persons working around them. It also develops the sense of satisfaction by cooperating with others, which one feels as his instantaneous reward 4)Helps in Training and development: As more and more organization realize that their competitive edge depends on employees who are up to date, self development will become the dominant mode
14
IMPORTANCE OF SELF DEVELOPMETN for training. A person using self development however is more able to set up the development activities to suit her or himself. Trainers who have successfully used self development are better placed to use it with their trainees. It is often less expensive than formal development and can be used when you are ready, not just when the funds and facilities for conventional training are available.
