Bacteria are traditionally divided into two major categories. What are they and what are the differences that distinguish the two categories (color is an insufficient answer)? THE QUESTION: THE ANSWER: Bacteria have been divided into Gram positive and Gram negative. Gram positive bacteria have a thicker cell wall (20- 80nm) than Gram negative bacteria (2-7 nm). Gram negative bacteria also have an outer membrane outside of the cell wall.
