DoJ IT Environment 1 Mainframe (Fujitsu) 122 Unix (Sun) Computers 135 Windows 2000 File and Print Servers (HP) 70 Windows 2003 Application Servers (HP) 125 Computer Network Sites 4,900 PCs IT Staff- 104 Permanent - 25 Contractors IT Staff in Business Units 40 2
6
Project Intent Initially – Migrate to supported software –PCs and Server Operating Systems migration from NT to Windows 2000/2003/XP –No impact to level and quality of services –New SOE for PCs and Servers Subsequently – PCs and Server Support/Deployment Process Redesign 3
7
Project Objectives Consolidate server environment & improve system reliability Reduce the time taken to build SOE platforms Provide the means to build SOE systems anywhere in DoJ network Minimise variations in SOE platforms & implement change control Improve support via remote tools (Service Desk) A more controlled & manageable environment 4
8
Partner Engagement HP selected to Partner DoJ for: –Planning & Design –Build and Test –Deploy and Support- Stage 1 - Stage 2 undertaken by DoJ Microsoft provided Quality and Assurance Services 5
9
Previous Server Environment Multiple SOE’s Manual (1 day) build process → Inconsistent SOE’s Few remote Management / Diagnostic / Reporting Tools Servers owned by Business Units → limited consolidation → high cost Wide variety and vintage HP server models Re-active rather than pro-active management environment 6
10
Previous Desktop Environment Windows NT SOE build process very time consuming –Takes up to 5 days per workstation to complete –2 Stage process: - Supplier builds SOE off-site - Application installs on-site Manual workstation configurations performed –Either at 452 Flinders Street or 55 St Andrews Place 7
11
Previous Desktop Environment continued Windows NT SOE Not Consistent –Technicians applying individual configuration settings –Inefficient & redundant practices for support –Lack of license tracking & software version maintenance Limited HelpDesk (first level) Support –Requires second level support staff to attend issues –Lack of tools in SOE 8
12
Server and PC – SOE Migration Project Server Roll-out (HP and DoJ) –CommencedDecember 2002 –CompletedNovember 2003 –160 NT servers → 130 Windows 2000 HP Responsible for Planning / Design & Build / Test + DoJ input PC Roll-out (HP – Stage 1 and DoJ Stages 1 and 2) –StartedFebruary 2004 –CompletedFebruary 2005 –Approximately 5,000 desktop/laptops MAJOR AND COMPLEX PROJECT 9
13
Win2x Features A new Windows 2000 Active Directory Zero-touch workstation build New support capability 10
14
Win2x End-user Impact Transparency of back-end maintenance Change minimisation Industry compatibility Improved customer experience 11
15
Project Outcomes Server Achievements –Standardisation Acceptance of a corporate & standard SOE Consistency in server back-ups monitoring & reporting Automated build process for new servers (½ Day) Standardised on 3 hardware configurations 12
16
Project Outcomes continued Server Achievements (Continued) –Software Management Tools Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) installed Standard versions of Software Auto alerts of all incidentals (H/S) on Servers Compaq Insight Manager (CIM) installed on all servers iLo enables hardware remote access and management Up-to-date inventory of ALL servers 13
17
PC Achievements Standardisation –Corporate & standard environment across DoJ –Suppliers completing delivery, build and clean up –Automated build process (2 hours) –Corporate wallpaper and screen savers Software –Standard versions of software –All software packaged and centrally deployed 14
18
PC Achievements continued Support –Hardware and software tracking for audit –SOE build consistent and speedy at all sites –Locked down and consistent configuration of desktop 15
19
Business Benefits –HelpDesk → ServiceDesk –Faster resolution of support request –Improved service levels (performance and reporting) –More stable environment → significantly reduced incidents (Lock-down SOE) –Faster (auto) software deployment – via packaging –Support cost reduction –Server Consolidation → lower costs –Reduced software inventory/versions 16
