You are looking at a PowerPoint slide and toolbars. Look to the right of this slide Look at the up & down bar with arrows at the top & bottom. Put the cursor (but don’t click it) on the button with 2 down arrows at the bottom. Wait for further direction...

As we go through these slides, you will learn about the most useful buttons and tools in this program. Go to next slide...

Do you know how to “select” text? Put the cursor in front of the first word on this screen, press the mouse button down, hold it down and move the mouse to the right, so the whole line is “highlighted” or “selected.” Now lift your finger off the mouse button. Now click the mouse anywhere on the screen and the text will be unhighlighted. Click on the “Next Slide” button.

Fun with Fonts “Font” is the kind of letter type. To change the font, highlight some text (using your mouse). Then click on the little black triangle to the right of where it says “Times New Roman” (above the red arrow). Choose a different font. Click on the “Next Slide” button

Let’s play with the size of the font! Highlight the word “play” in the top line. Above the slide, go to the white bar with the number in it. Click on the little black triangle arrow and choose a new number. Click on “Next Slide” button.

Bigger / Smaller Font Size An easy way to play with the size of the font (size of letters) is to use the 2 buttons that have the letter A on them. –The large letter A will make any highlighted text get bigger. –The small letter A will make any highlighted text get smaller. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Shadow Learning Bold, Italic, Underline and Shadow Highlight the phrase “text effects” here. Try clicking on the buttons with the letters “B” “I” “U” or “S” and see the effect. To take off the effect, highlight the text again and click the button a second time. (Can you remove all effects in the title of this slide?)

Now let’s change the text color... First, highlight the word “color” in the title. Then click the cursor on the button with 8 small squares of color and the letter A. You can choose one of the colors they show, or click on “Other color” for many more choices. Color text shows up better when bold (not bold).

Alignment of Text LEFT ALIGNED “Alignment” is whether the text is lined up at the left margin like this or if it is all centered like the text you see on the right half of this slide. The buttons for left or center alignment are above the arrows. CENTER ALIGNED This text is aligned to the center which means it looks fairly symmetrical, but it is sometimes harder to read. Aligning something is also sometimes called “Justify.”

Buttons for Bullets There are 3 buttons that deal with bullets. The button (3rd from the right) that has 3 dots and 3 lines turns the bullets on or off. The button with the arrow pointing left makes a bullet go left towards the left margin (for a more major point). The button with the arrow pointing right makes a bullet go right towards the right margin (for a more minor point).

At top left of screen, click on “File” Remember this: when you get to a File Name box, you’re going to replace “instruct” with your name Now click on “Save As” from the list of options SAVE YOUR WORK!

BACKGROUND COLOR! To change the background color, you must use the “Format” menu. Click on the word “Format” at the top of the screen. Towards the bottom of the list, click on “Slide Color Scheme.” Click on the box for “Background.” Click on “Change Color” bar. Click on a color. Click on “Apply.”

CUT, COPY AND PASTE Highlight this sentence. Then click on the button above the yellow arrow (COPY). Then click after where it says “Click here!” at the top of the right column. Then click on the button above the blue arrow (PASTE). “Click here.” Congrats! You just copied and pasted! Highlight this sentence. Then click on the scissors button (CUT). Paste it back where it came from! (click on “Paste.”

OOPS! There’s a very easy way to fix a mistake! When you click once on the arrow curving to the left in the top row of buttons, and it will undo the one last thing you did. Test it out: click once on the orange arrow on this slide, then hit the “delete” button once on your keyboard. Now click on the “undo” button.

Viewing the Presentation! Right now, you’re seeing “Slide View” where you can make changes on the slide. There are other views that help you check out what you’re doing as you create. Without clicking on any buttons, place the cursor on the buttons under the purple arrow, and see what they represent. Notice that right now, the far left button is selected.

Seeing many slides at once... Read all before you do any clicking! You’re going to click on the button that has 4 white squares on it. (Don’t click yet!) You will see several slides laid out at once. Remember this: to get back to this view, click on the far left button with a single white square. Now go ahead and click on the button with 4 white squares (Slide Sorter).

Seeing the “REAL” presentation! Read before you do any clicking! You’re going to click on the button that has a projection screen. (Don’t click yet!) You will see the slide over the entire screen. To get back to this view, press the “ESC” button on the top left of your keyboard. Now go ahead and click on the button with a projection screen (“Slide Show”).

MAKING SHAPES Click on the button at left with 3 shapes in it. Now click on any of the shapes in the box. Put the pointer anywhere on the slide, press the button down, drag the mouse any direction, and release the button when the shape is big enough. To change color, click on a shape, then click on button at left with “paint bucket” and 8 small color squares. Pick your color. To delete a shape, click on it, then press delete on the keyboard.

FILLING A SHAPE WITH COLOR, PATTERNS AND SHADING Delete all the shapes on this slide. Make a couple more shapes. Select a shape; click on the “Fill Color” button. (“Paint bucket” in left-hand tool bar.) Try using “Patterned” and “Shaded” on shapes.

To close any extra tool bars: Whenever you see a bar or window with a box with an “X” at the top right hand corner, you can close that window or bar by clicking on the “X” button. Close the AutoShapes tool box at left.

TOOLBARS Toolbars are the rows of buttons and bars around the screen. You don’t need to see all of them all the time. To see your Toolbar options, click on the word “View” at the top left of the screen. Then click on “Toolbars” and look at the options. Don’t make any changes--if you did, click on Cancel.

STRETCH SHAPES Once you’ve got shapes on the slide, you can alter them. To stretch a shape, click on it, then drag one of the squares at its corners.

ROTATE SHAPES To rotate a shape, click on it so the black squares appear in the corners. Click on the button at left with the arrow going in a circle. Then put the cursor (which is now circling arrows) around one of the black squares and drag the corner of the shape in a circular direction.

TEXT ON A SHAPE To type on a shape, double click on it. When a cursor appears on the shape, you can type on it. Try it on the speech bubble. YOU’RE THE BEST! CHECK IT OUT!

The next task we’ll learn......is inserting a new, blank slide. Important: Read this whole slide before you click on anything! See the button that says “New Slide” below the green arrow? Remember this: after you click on it, choose an option with the funny face. Now click on “New Slide.” Click on a funny face, then “OK” button.

** QUICK SAVE ** Since you’ve saved your document once using “Save As,” you can now use the Quick Save button. The Quick Save button is at the top left of the screen and looks like a computer disc (third from left under the word “Edit”). Quick Save automatically uses the file name you’ve already been using.

Spell Check it! Look for the check mark with “ABC” in the bar of buttons. (It’s 3rd from the left.) When the computer doesn’t know a word, it may suggest options--read them, and choose “Change” or “Ignore.” Click on “Spell Check” and run through the checking process.

ANIMATION Create 2 shapes on this slide using AutoShapes (button at left with 3 shapes on it). Click on one of the shapes. Click on the yellow star button, “Animation.” Choose the skateboard, star or swirly spider. Click on the second shape. Click on another Animation option. Go to “Slide Show” to see what the effect looks like. (click to see next shape appear; then use “ESC” at top left of keyboard to return to original view)

Animation of Text In addition to animating shapes, you can also animate text. All bullet points in the same “text box” will have the same animation. Bullets in different shaded boxes of text can have different kinds of animation. To animate this slide, click on the “Animation” button. Click on the title, then click on an effect. Click on the left text box, click on a different effect. Click on this text box, click on an effect. Click on “Slide Show” to see effects.

Transitions There are different ways this program can take you from one slide to the next during the presentation. Using the Up & Down Bar at the right side of this slide, you will put the “current slide” marker all the way at the top (Slide 1) and then click on the “Slide Show” button at bottom left (looks like a projection screen). Watch for the different ways the slides transition.
