Specialized Terminology in Textbooks  Look for vocabulary lists at the beginning or end of each chapter.  Pay attention to words in italics, boldface type, or colored print.  Pay attention to new terms in the margin.  Check for glossary at end of book.

Create a System for Learning New Terms  Mark new terms in the textbook.  Make a note of the meaning in the text margin.  Use the glossary to test your recall of new terms:  Read an entry  Cover the definition  Try to recall the definition  Check to see if you are correct

Subject Area Dictionaries  List the most important words in a particular discipline.  Suggest how and when to use the words.  Examples:  The American Dictionary of Economics.  The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.  The Dictionary of Anthropology.

Mapping Related Terminology  Mapping involves drawing a chart or diagram that shows the connection or relationship among various terms.  Example:  The physical properties of matter from a physics textbook can be visualized through mapping.

Evaluate Your Vocabulary Learning  Can you explain a definition in your own words?  Can you explain a new term to a friend?  Can you explain differences between similar terms?  Can you think of examples of the new term?  Can you use the term in your speech and writing?

Instructors Emphasize New Terms by:  Writing new words on the chalk board.  Slowing down the lecture to give students a chance to record new terms and definitions.  Repeating a word and its definition several times.  Offering several variations of a meaning.

Organizing Vocabulary Files  Use Index cards – write the term on the front and the definition on the back (use a separate card for each word).  Notebook sections – create running list of terms and definitions.  Computer files – use cut and paste or copy functions to group similar terms.
