MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS OBJECTIVE: I will multiply mixed numbers (using cross canceling to simplify) VOCABULARY: MIXED NUMBER – a number made up of a whole number and a fraction IMPROPER FRACTION – a fraction greater than 1 The numerator is larger than the denominator (TOP HEAVY)
2
MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS EX: 4 2/7 X 1 2/5 STEP 1: Change all mixed numbers to improper fractions TO DO THIS: *MULTIPLY the whole number by the denominator *ADD that product to the numerator ***REMEMBER the denominator stays the SAME You should have a new problem of 30/7 x 7/5
3
MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS EX: 4 2/7 X 1 2/5 STEP 1: Change all mixed numbers to improper fractions You should have a new problem of 30/7 x 7/5 STEP 2: MULTIPLY (don’t forget to cross cancel) 30 X 7 = 6 x 1 = 6 7 5 1 x 1 1 7 5 1 x 1 1

MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS EX: 4 2/7 X 1 2/5 STEP 1: Change all mixed numbers to improper fractions You should have a new problem of 30/7 x 7/5 STEP 2: MULTIPLY (don’t forget to cross cancel) 30 X 7 = 6 x 1 = 6 7 5 1 x 1 1 7 5 1 x 1 1 STEP 3: Rewrite in lowest terms (REDUCE/SIMPLIFY) 6/1 = 6 If your answer is improper (top heavy) then TOP goes in the BOX
5
MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS EX: If my answer was 14/3 TOP GOES IN THE BOX 4 3 14 -12 -12 2 *Your REMAINDER becomes your NUMERATOR **The DENOMINATOR stays the SAME! 4 2/3
6
MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS EX: 8 X 2 ¼ STEP 1: Change all mixed numbers and whole numbers to improper fractions You should have a new problem of 8/1 x 9/4 STEP 2: MULTIPLY (don’t forget to cross cancel) 8 X 9 = 2 x 9 = 18 = 18 8 X 9 = 2 x 9 = 18 = 18 1 4 1 x 1 1 1 4 1 x 1 1 STEP 3: SIMPLIFY
