3 What is community health?  A discipline that looks at the improvement of the health characteristics of the communities.  Local  National  Global

4 CDC  Center for Disease Control and Prevention  "CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same" (CDC).works 24/7

5 FDA  Food and Drug Administration  "is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation" (FDA).

6 NIH  National Institutes of Health  "the goal of NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold" (NIH).  Conduct research in  NIH Laboratories  Universities  Medical Schools  Hospitals

7 NIMH  National Institute of Mental Health  " transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure" (NIMH).

9 Assignment  You may work groups of 3-4  You will research an organization that is actively working within your community.  You and your partners will create a tri-fold poster which will include:  The name of your organization.  What is the organization's mission statement is.  What is the primary purpose of the organization is.  What are they actively doing within the community?  What are somethings that you find interesting about the organization?  How might others get involved?  The organizations contact information.  Where are they located?  Why did you choose this organization?  Want to get more involved?  Get involved with one of the community outreach programs, participate, volunteer
