The Parts of a Sentence Fragments

Basic Definition A sentence fragment is a part of a sentence that is punctuated as if it were a complete sentence Ex: If I go to the store.

Missing Parts One cause of sentence fragments is missing parts of a sentence Can be lacking a subject, verb, or both. Chef Crum angered by the rejection No verb: Chef Crum was angered by the rejection. Ex: Soon, faced a guest’s disapproval No subject: Soon, he faced a guest’s disapproval.

Phrases A phrase is a group of words that function as a part of speech and does not have a subject or verb. Phrases that stand alone are fragments. Ex: The pretzel has a long history. Dating back to A.D. 610. Fix it: The pretzel has a long history, dating back to A.D. 610.

Clauses A group of words that has a subject and a verb, but does not express a complete thought. Clauses on their own are fragments. Ex: Although he is better known as Mark Twain. Fix it: Although he is better known as Mark Twain, the author’s name is Samuel Clemens.
