We have been meeting to chat about how we can take sport forward even more in Kirkhill. A few months ago, we applied for a very special award called the Sport Scotland Gold Award. This is very special because only a very small number of schools are awarded Gold for their provision of Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport.
6
We were presented with a special flag as a reward. This is in recognition of our achievements in putting quality physical education and school sport at the heart of our school.
7
The Gold Award highlights that Kirkhill Primary School and the Kirkhill Sports Committee has demonstrated an on-going commitment to increase opportunities for pupils to take part in quality physical education and school sport, for example, through our PE lessons, our extra-curricular clubs, our playground activities (like the MUGA and PLAYZONE). Let’s take a closer look...

These are just a few examples. They show how well we work with people like Miss Crawford and Mr West to make Physical Education, Activity and Sport so successful in Kirkhill.

As part of our Action Plan, the Kirkhill Sports Committee thought about targets to make sport even better in Kirkhill. We have been looking at developing leadership opportunities for pupils. We already have our Wellbies and Club Leaders but now we are working as Sports Leaders, using our talents to help teachers and pupils during PE lessons, for example, by demonstrating a skill in gymnastics.

We are all timetabled to work with classes during their PE lessons. We lead a class warm up and also demonstrate skill and correct form.

We also look at creating ‘pathways’. This means finding opportunities to work with coaches and local sports organisations. This year, our P6 and P7 pupils are working with Whitecraigs Rugby Club in PE and they also take our after-school Rugby Clubs. To name a few others... Blizzard Dance Company take all of our Dance Clubs. Giffnock Hockey Club have taken our after-school Hockey Club. Giffnock Soccer are taking a Girls Football Club. Whitecraigs Tennis Club are now running a club this year.
22
Our last target for the year is to look for opportunities for pupils to spectate professional sports. Tomorrow we are going to the National Hockey Centre at Glasgow Green to watch a hockey match between Scotland and Ireland ladies teams. This is just the beginning for us as we aim to look for other opportunities to do this, not just for us but also for other pupils in the school.
