1
Distributive Property The Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition Multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products 5 X (7 + 9) = (5 X 7) + (5 X 9)
2
Distributive Property This property can also be used over subtraction. 2 X ( 10 – 8) = (2 X 10) – (2 X 8)
3
Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to find the product. 8 X 59 = 8 X ( + ) use a multiple of 10 + 9 = ( 8 X ) + ( 8 X ) = + =
4
Distributive Property Another way is for subtraction. 8 X 59 = 8 X ( - 1) use a multiple of 10 = ( X 60) – (8 X ) = -- =
5
Distributive Property Practice workbook page 67. Complete together to show the distributive property in a grid to find the product.
6
Distributive Property Demonstrate the following expressions using the distributive property. 12 X 18 20 X 23
7
Distributive Property 30 X 33 2 X 59
8
Distributive Property Restate the expression using the distributive property. 6 X ( 9 + n ) when n is 30
9
Distributive Propery Restate 7 X ( n + 5) if n is 50
10
Distributive Property Solve using the distributive property. 3 X 78 3 X ( + ) ( 3 X ) + ( 3 X ) +
11
Distributive Property Restate n X (8 + 60) if n is 3
12
Distributive Property Find the value of n. 7 + n = 4 + 32 n + 19 = 22 + 14
13
Distributive Property Complete on an index card and give to me. Solve the following using the Distributive Property Tom drives 42 miles a day to commute to work. When he drives 5 days, how many miles does he drive to work?
