Types of Writing, Prompts, and the ARCH Method

2. Narrative writing
A narrative is the story (fiction or non-fiction) told and the order in which it is told. Sometimes, there is a narrator, a character or series of characters, who tell the story. Sometimes, as with most non-fiction, the author himself/herself in the narrator.

3. What does a narrative prompt look like?
The author describes many ways that dragons have been significant to different cultures throughout history. Using information from the text, write an introduction to a short story that will feature a dragon or dragons. Be sure your introduction establishes the story’s setting, point of view, and primary conflict.

4. Argumentative writing
Argumentative writing requires a writer to defend a position on a topic using evidence from personal experience, literature, historical examples, and research to support his or her viewpoint. The writer usually uses several different arguments to prove his or her point.

5. What does an argumentative prompt look like?
Which author MOST successfully develops the topic according to his/her purpose using valid reasoning and relevant evidence? Use details from BOTH articles to support your answer.

6. Informational/explanatory writing
Informational writing is writing that informs. It is a type of non-fiction writing, which means it is factual. Many examples of informational writing can be found in newspapers, almanacs and reference books. The purpose of informational writing is to convey information about something.

7. What does an informational/explanatory prompt look like?
Write an informational essay in your own words explaining the ways in which libraries are adapting and changing in the 21st century.
Now write your informational essay. Be sure to:
Use information from the two texts so that your essay includes important details.
Introduce the topic clearly, provide a focus, and organize information in a way that makes sense.
Develop the topic with facts, definitions, details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic.
Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion.
Clarify the relationship among ideas and concepts.
Use clear language and vocabulary to inform about the topic.
Provide a conclusion that follows the information presented.
Check your work for correct grammar, usage, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation.

8. Create an arch diagram
The following passage was written by Richard Rodriguez, the first college-educated member of his family. Read the passage carefully, then write an essay analyzing how Rodriguez’s presentation of the events in the passage suggest his attitude toward his family and himself. You might consider such elements as narrative structure, selection of detail, manipulation of language, and tone.
