 In the SpringBoard section of your notebook, answer the question on p. 50 about finding yourself in a completely new environment. Hint: if you think you have never felt this way before, think of your first day in high school…

An allusion is a reference to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art, or another literary work. What makes the following cartoon funny?

 Read the essay Where Worlds Collide. As we read it together, underline or highlight everything you find that contains imagery. Allusions can have imagery too!  I do: I will read the first 2 paragraphs and help you find some allusions.  We do: As I read the rest of the essay, find your own examples of allusions!  Some examples: Dodgers caps, Rodeo Drive, Terminator 2, etc.

Now it’s your turn! On your own, complete the following assignment: 1) Go back to pp. 50 and 51 and answer the Key Ideas and Details questions in the margin. You will have 20 minutes for this, and then we will discuss! 2) Go to p. 52. At the top, you are asked to create a list of all the allusions you found in the essay. Write them in the My Notes section on the left side. Be ready to discuss!

 Look at the persuasive writing prompt at the bottom of p. 52. You are asked to answer the following question in at least one paragraph:  To what extent does one’s background affect his or her perception of a given situation? Use Where Worlds Collide as your primary source.
