Flower Definitions, Standards 2 and 5 Pollen: Tiny grains that contain sperm (male) Pollination: The transfer of pollen to an egg producing organ. Embryo: An unborn organism in its very early stages of development. Sepal: Leaf-like structures at the base of a flower Petal: colorful blades that surround the inner parts of the flower

Stamen: the male reproductive part of the flower Anther: the part of the stamen that produces pollen grains male

Filament: the stalk that holds the anther in place.

Phloem is the vascular tissue through which food moves in some plants Xylem is the vascular tissue which water and nutrients move through in some plants.

Ovary: the enlarged base of a pistil; female reproductive organ which produces (makes) female sex cells or eggs. Ovule: the organ that produces and holds eggs in aflower (female) Fruit: a mature or developed ovary Fertilization: the joining of a sperm and an egg
