What is Tone in writing? Grade 6, Unit 4 - Text used by permission of unit author, C. Webb

What is tone? Tone is one of the many literary devices used by writers to create a literary work.

What is the definition of tone?  Tone: the reflection in a work of an author’s attitude toward his or her subject, characters, or readers  So… tone is how the author feels – about:  The subject  The characters  The readers

What kind of “attitude” can an author show toward something?  Positive – likes it  Negative – does not like it  Suspicious – does not trust it  Sympathetic – feels sorry for it  Fearful – fears it  Enthusiastic – thinks it is great

Can I see an example of tone in a passage? “I love to fly on my bicycle! Every day after school I leap on my bike and tear out for a fast spin around the block. The wind in my face, the ground flying by, the power of my legs – all make me feel free and alive!” “I love to fly on my bicycle! Every day after school I leap on my bike and tear out for a fast spin around the block. The wind in my face, the ground flying by, the power of my legs – all make me feel free and alive!” What is the “author’s attitude” toward the subject?

What words does the author use to create the tone? “I love to fly on my bicycle! Every day after school I leap on my bike and tear out for a fast spin around the block. The wind in my face, the ground flying by, the power of my legs – all make me feel free and alive!” “I love to fly on my bicycle!
