Variables Study Guide
3
1. What is the definition of experiment? An investigation we do to see how variables affect outcomes.
4
2. What is the definition of controlled experiment? When only one variable is changed in an experiment.
5
3. What is the definition of variable? Something that can be added or changed that changes the outcome of the experiment.
6
4. What is the definition of capacity? The maximum amount an object can hold.
7
5.What is the definition of a system? A group of objects that work together.
8
6.What is the definition of standard wind? Calm, steady wind that doesn’t cause any problems during a flight.
9
7.What is the definition of pre- flight information? When the pilot checks the oil, gas, engine, wings, weather, wind speed, wind direction, and the route he is going to take before taking off.
10
8.What is the definition of post-flight information? The pilot refuels the plane and takes care of all the information from pre-flight in order for the plane to be ready to fly again.
11
9. Give an example of a system. Draw your system. Label the parts of the system.
12
10. A two-coordinate graph has an __x_____ axis and a ____y___ axis.
13
12. A concrete graph uses real items to display information.
14
13. What were the 3 variables tested for the pendulum experiment? Number of pennies Length of string Size of paper clip How many pennies?
15
14.Fill in the blanks: Pendulum: The shorter the string, the more it swings. The longer the string, the less it swings. Life Boats: The bigger the boat, the more passengers fit. The smaller the boat, the fewer the passengers.
16
15.What is the most important thing to remember when you are doing experiment? Safety is the most important thing to remember when you are doing an experiment.
17
16.What are the parts of the pendulum system? Paper clip, penny, string, pencil
18
17.What are the parts of the life boat system? Water, basin, pennies, lifeboats
19
18.What are the parts of the airplane system? Craft stick, rubber band, propeller, hook, tape
20
19. What were the 3 variables tested for the pendulum experiment? Number of pennies Length of string Size of paper clip How many pennies?
21
20. What were the 3 variables we tested in the airplane experiment? Type of rubber band, Length of string, Weight on the airplane
22
21. What was the one variable we tested in the life boat experiment? Capacity
23
22. What was the variable that had an effect on the pendulum experiment? Length
24
23. Fill in the blanks: The larger the boat, the greater the number of passengers. The smaller the boat, the fewer the passengers.
25
24. Why is it important to know all the parts of a system before you can predict what will happen? If you don’t know all the parts of a system you will not know what the outcome is supposed to be so you won’t know if your system is working correctly or not.
26
25. Review concrete graphs, pictographs, and coordinate graphs. I will give you data to plot on each of these graphs. This is very similar to page 12 of your variables journal.
