The Sun and the Moon look about the same size from Earth, but they are not. The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon but is 400 times further away! The Moon takes about 28 days to orbit the Earth. sunlight The Moon The Moon takes about 28 days to make one complete rotation.

What people sometimes call "moonlight" is really sunlight reflecting off the Moon's surface. The Moon itself puts out no light at all. It takes about four weeks for the Moon to orbit once around Earth. During this time, the Moon's position relative to Earth and the Sun is constantly changing. During part of its journey, the Moon is between Earth and the Sun. Then, a few days later, it is off to one side. Still later, the Moon moves around so that Earth is between it and the Sun. And so on.

Use the lamp, globe and a ping pong ball to show how the moon looks different during its cycle Teacher demonstration and pupil interaction -

Key Words- Waxing: if the light part is growing, the Moon is referred to as waxing (moving towards a full moon). waxing Waning: If the light part is shrinking, the Moon is referred to as waning (moving towards a new moon). Gibbous: bulging outwards

Phases of the Moon activity

Where must the Moon be for a solar eclipse to take place? During a solar eclipse the Moon moves directly between the Sun and the Earth. What happens during a solar eclipse? During a solar eclipse the Moon blocks the Sun’s rays from reaching part of the Earth.

Where must the Moon be for a lunar eclipse to take place? During a lunar eclipse the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth to the Sun. What happens during a lunar eclipse? During a lunar eclipse the Earth blocks the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon.
