Student Binder System Components include: 1.Binder procedure lots of love! 2.Order of items in your binder 3.Divider procedures 4.Divider labeling 5.Handling of notebook paper 6.Labeling student name or student heading on work 7.Formatting, presenting, or correcting your work 8.Teacher Binder Checks 9.Class Hole punch & repair 10.2-Pocket 3-hole punched folder

Binder Procedures Take care of your binder Avoid crushing, smashing, wetting, crinkling, spitting, dragging, etc. Take binder home every day – Boomerang it! Take home & bring back every day Use the 3-rings as they were designed Open, insert, close rings ORGANIZE IT, daily!!! In fact, take 15 seconds during content time to PUT PAPERS AWAY! One or two papers is way easier to manage, than 10- 20 papers Parents monitor, but DO NOT REMOVE ANY PAPERS DO NOT WASTE INSTRUCTION/LEARNING TIME FOR BINDERS!

Order of Items In Your Binder 1.2-Pocket Folder –TDW & GHP 2.Student Planner 3.± 50 Sheets of Notebook Paper 4.Content Area Divider Tabs 5. Pencil Pouch, if you have one

What’s behind binder dividers? ADD papers BEHIND each binder tab AND in REVERSE DATE order! Reverse date order means the most current will be immediately behind the divider. Papers that are older are in the back. Student work: In-process work Completed unit assignments Handouts: Instructions Information Graded work: Including assessments

Handling of Notebook Paper 1.Store notebook paper 50 sheets behind the first divider Keep papers unwrinkled, unfolded, untorn, unmashed… 2.Always open rings to remove paper Never, never, never pull or tear paper out 3.To add papers: Add paper(s) immediately behind the correct divider tab Paper(s) will be in reverse date order 4.Hook papers onto each of the 3 rings No loose papers!!! 5.Hole reinforcements should be used to repair the damage; ask teacher or buy your own

Labeling Student Name or Student Header on Assignments or Work 1.Always write your first AND last name on EACH assignment or handout!!! 2.IGNORE the pre-printed place to write your name on assignments or handouts!!! 3.Follow the teacher’s direction, or ASK if you are confused such as if you need: a.Your name only b.Your name & date c.Your name, date & content area (full student heading) d.Your name (or student heading) in a different location, e.g. bottom right corner for artwork

Teacher Binder Checks! Periodically, you will need to be graded on your organizational skills During binder checks, HANDS OFF! It is NOT the time to start putting things in the right place Class mates could monitor each other from using “Binder Checks” as a time to organize before the teacher comes around

Parent Participation with Binder Parents must oversee, monitor, and review: –To help with student organizational skills –To help improve student’s ability –To help with student success –To support school, teacher, and classroom

Class Hole Punch Use the classroom hole punch, if paper is not punched not during instructional time learn how to use it correctly: Align papers neatly before punching Use the guide on the punch to align where the holes will get punched DO NOT ADJUST guides! Ask teacher! Maximum 3 papers at a time; gather peers papers at table Remove staple, if attached

2-Pocket 3-Hole Punched Folder Go Home Papers (GHP) & To- Do Work (TDW) Stored in at the front binder or if loose, tucked in the front! GHP: Go Home Papers Papers that are for you or your parents TDW: To Do Work Papers that need your attention right away such as: –Working on it! a.k.a. in-process work

NO FIXING - HANDS OFF! 1 st Binder Check – 9-28-15 CHECK Set-up: Notebook paper behind 1 st divider Correctly labeled & ordered dividers CHECK Organization: NO LOOSE PAPERS All papers organized behind content area, in reverse date order, behind divider Pocket Folder does not have anything but TDW; GHP side should be empty Behind MISC: “Parent, Student Teacher School Work Contract” “Student Binder & Paper System”
