VERB A word that expresses an action or state of being.

Action Verbs Action verbs express physical or mental action. Examples: run, jump, think

Transitive Verbs An action verb that expresses a direct action toward a person, place or thing. Example: Laila entertained the child.

Action Verbs and Direct Objects A direct object is a noun or pronoun that follows an action verb. The direct object receives the action. Example: Laila entertained the child. In this sentence child is the direct object because it receives the action.

Intransitive Verbs A verb that does not pass on action to a receiver or an object. It simply expresses an action or tells something about the subject. Example: Katrina studies hard.

Linking Verbs Express a state of being and connects the subject of a sentence with a word in the predicate. Examples: is, am, are, was, may, be, has, appear, seem

Helping Verbs Helps the main verb express an action or state of being. Examples: can speak will learn Helping verb+ Main verb= Verb Phrase
