Lesson 4: Overview of System Center 2012 Components System Center 2012 Private Cloud Components VMM Overview App Controller Overview Service Manager Overview Orchestrator Overview Operations Manager Overview DPM Overview
3
VMM features include: Multi-host and multi-vendor VMM support Intelligent placement Dynamic Optimization P2V conversion Server App-V support Live migration Delegated administration Cloud, infrastructure and services management Power optimization VMM Overview VMM allows you to configure and manage your virtualization host, networking, and storage resources so that you can create and deploy virtual machines and services to private clouds
4
What Is a Private Cloud? A private cloud is a set of computers, applications, hardware and infrastructure components, with a high level of automation that provides users with services when they need them Cloud provides: Self servicing Resource pooling Elasticity Usage Customizable Control
5
Configuring Private Cloud Capacity By specifying private cloud capacity, you limit the resources that private cloud users can create or consume Quota types: Virtual CPUs Memory Storage Custom quota (points) Virtual machines
6
App Controller Overview App Controller is a self-servicing tool for end-users that allows them to manage, deploy, and view both private and public cloud resources
7
Overview of App Controller VMM Hyper-V vCenter Xen- Server App Controller Windows Azure Physical Servers VMM Application Monitoring, Management & Automation App Controller is a self-service tool for end users that allows them to manage, deploy, and view both private and public cloud resources
8
Deploying and Managing Virtual Machines and Services with App Controller Add App Controller to intranet sites App Controller is available at https://AppControllerServerFQDN/https://AppControllerServerFQDN/ Add App Controller to intranet sites App Controller is available at https://AppControllerServerFQDN/https://AppControllerServerFQDN/
9
Service Manager Overview Service Manager allows you to automate and adapt IT service management best practices to your organization's requirements You can: Reduce mean time for resolving issues through a self-service user experience Improve private cloud efficiency through centralized management of change processes Provide self-service deployment of private cloud resources performance and availability Implement compliance controls for managing the private cloud infrastructure
10
Service Request Fulfillment Service request fulfillment in Service Manager functions as follows: Service Manager treats each service request as a work item End-users create service requests in Service Manager by accessing the service catalog on the Self-Service Portal, or by email Administrators use the Service Manager console to review and approve activities related to service requests Service requests are requests for existing, preauthorized services and features
11
Operations Manager Overview Operations Manager monitors the private cloud infrastructure to ensure predictable performance and service availability You can: Use a single pane to monitor infrastructure, network, applications, transactions, and code Monitor applications both on the private cloud and the public cloud Monitor Microsoft and non-Microsoft platforms, including Unix, Linux, and VMware Create reports or dashboards from the data collected based on performance or other aspects
12
Providing Security for Agent Communication Management Server Agent- Monitored Server Gateway Server Authenticated by certificate Authenticated by Kerberos
13
Overview of Management Packs Management packs contain the settings that allow you to monitor infrastructure components Management packs can contain: Object discoveries Monitors Rules Tasks Knowledge Views Reports Run As profiles
14
Creating a Management Pack Operations Manager includes the following templates to help you create your own management packs:.NET Application Performance Monitoring OLE DB Data Source Process Monitoring TCP Port UNIX or Linux Log file UNIX or Linux Service Web Application Transaction Monitoring Windows Service You can seal management packs that you create to prevent modification
15
Monitoring Web Applications Use the Web Application Transaction Monitoring template to monitor availability and performance of web applications Advanced monitoring can be based on: Http Status Code Content Match Response Time Use Web Recorder to record a session in the application
16
Dashboard View Integration with SharePoint Server SharePoint Server 2010 Operations Manager Web Console Web Browser You can display Operations Manager dashboard views in a SharePoint Server site
17
DPM Overview DPM provides protection for files, folders, Exchange Server, SQL Server, VMM, SharePoint, Hyper-V, and client computers You can: Recover bare-metal servers and Windows desktops Back up and recover from disk or tape Centrally manage the DPM servers with the DPM Administrator Console Use role-based access permissions to distribute backup and restore management Perform quick item-level recovery
18
Selecting a Backup Method Protected Computer DPM Server Tape Library Disk-to-Disk Disk-to-Tape Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape Protected Computer DPM Server Tape Library Disk-to-Disk-to-Cloud Protected Computer DPM Server

Options for Protecting the Private Cloud Hyper-V Online Backup Windows Server 2008 and newer Hyper-V Offline Backup Servers that do not support VSS Cluster Backup Servers in a cluster such as Hyper-V servers with CSV In guest protection Windows Server 2008 and newer
22
Orchestrator Overview Orchestrator allows you to automate the creation, monitoring, and deployment of resources in your environment You can: Automate processes in your private cloud Improve operational efficiency Connect different systems from different vendors without the knowledge of scripting languages
23
