Why do we take a census? It measures the population in our country. We need to know how many people live here so that our government can serve them. 4 PEOPLE 8 PEOPLE 4 PEOPLE 2 PEOPLE 1 PEOPLE 3 PEOPLE 5 PEOPLE Total Population of Area: 27 people

Why is knowing the population important? We need to know what happens when the population goes up… ….and down.

So what effect does population have? CALIFORNIA POPULATION Population goes UP So the government is able to collect MORE tax revenue And because it has more money, it can provide MORE services to the people.

So what effect does population have? Population goes DOWN So the government is able to collect LESS tax revenue And because it has LESS money, it can’t provide the services that it used to.

This is all well and good, but… The majority of the HSA questions on this subject will ask questions about maps and graphs! And don’t worry, these are EASY! Just follow these steps…

STEPS: 1.Locate the legend and figure out what it means. 2.Figure out where population is going up or down. 3.Figure out what that means for taxation and services. If population goes up, tax revenue and government services go up. If population goes down, tax revenue and government services decrease.

STEPS: 1.Locate the counties and increased the most. 2.Figure out what that means for tax revenue and government services. 3.Do the same thing for the counties that decreased the most. If population goes up, tax revenue and government services go up. If population goes down, tax revenue and government services decrease.
