Mrs. Wilkins’ Second Grade A-Z Parent Orientation

A Accelerated Reader: Is a component of the Language Arts program. Individual and grade level goals are set for students. Absences: All absences are coded as unexcused unless we receive a note from the parent or doctor. Notes are required within three school days. –Refer to Code of Conduct, pp. 27 – 29.

B Birthdays: Please let us know in advance if you will be sending treats to celebrate your child’s birthday. These are served at lunch. Please do not send in any items that need to be cut or divided. Book Clubs: Occasionally we will send home book order forms from Scholastic, Carnival, etc. If you are interested in ordering books for your child, please make the check payable directly to the book club, or make an online order and payment.

C Conferences: Will be scheduled during my planning time, or after school. If you would like to request a conference, please send a note or e-mail me. Curriculum: You can access the Georgia Performance Standards by visiting the CCBOE website and clicking under the Student Learning tab.Georgia Performance Standards

D Discipline: We use a proactive discipline plan, in which we try to stop problems before they start. We set a positive tone in the classroom and make every attempt to guide children to make appropriate choices and take responsibility for their actions. If there is a specific problem, we will mark this on the Homework Sheet. A note may also be sent home. If needed, we will schedule a conference to find a way to help your child be more successful. Dress Code: Refer to Handbook page 6.

E E-mail: The best way to contact me during the school day is via e-mail. I am unable to get to a phone during the school day. My e-mail address is julie.wilkins@ccboe.net. julie.wilkins@ccboe.net Encore Rotations: We have a new 6-day rotation schedule. Please see the Encore Rotation Schedule for details.

F FISH Folder: Family Involvement Starts Here! This is our main home/school communication tool. Please check and initial this NIGHTLY for important information. Field trips: You will receive information about these as soon as the field trips are approved by the administration.

G Guidance will be offered during the year. Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Blackburn are our counselors and are available for group or individual counseling as well. Give Me Five is our school-wide quiet signal. Please help us model for the students whenever you hear it!

H Homework: I send home a weekly Homework Sheet in the FISH Folder. Students are required to complete homework assignments on time. Please initial the homework sheet each day when homework is completed.

I Invitations: Please do not send birthday party invitations to school to be distributed unless all class members are invited (or all the boys or all the girls). –If you prefer to invite individual students, those invitations should be sent through the mail. –Refer to p. 4. Internet Access: You will be able to access our class website, homework sheet, newsletter, and newsflashes online. :

J Jackets: Our classroom is either hot or cold! Your child might want to bring a light jacket or sweater. This can be left at school and returned on occasion for washing.

K Kindness: Students in our classroom are expected to treat ALL members of our school family (students, parents, teachers, staff, administration, and visitors) with kindness and respect.

L Lunch: We eat lunch each day at 11:10. If you would like to join us for lunch, please wait near the office door after you sign in at the office. –If you plan to eat a school lunch, please check the menu and send a note about which choice you would like to have ordered.

M Media Center: Students will have access to the media center on an “as needed” basis. When they have finished reading a book, they may take an AR test (if applicable), and then make another book selection. Money: Please place any money in an envelope stating its purpose and put it in the designated area in the FISH Folder. No loose money, please!

N Newsletter: Our weekly homework sheet, called the Wilkins Weekly, also serves as our weekly newsletter. Please take the time to read the information included, and then keep it in the appropriate section of the FISH Folder. This may include important dates and activities. Notes: Please place any notes in the designated section in the homework folder. This may be the ONLY place that is checked in the folder before lunch.

O Outdoor recess: Students should dress appropriately for the weather. If the weather permits, we will have daily outside recess from 9:55 – 10:15.

P P.E.: Students will have PE every other day (either M/W/ F OR T/Th). Please wear tennis shoes on P.E. days.

Q Quiet Hallways are a must! If you come to visit, please refrain from talking with your child and his or her classmates as we walk down the hall. This sends mixed messages about our rules!

R Responsibility: Please help us prepare your child for the “real world” by letting him assume responsibility for his work. Monitor your child, please, but do not do the work for him. Restrooms: Students may use the restroom as needed throughout the day, except during direct instruction (unless it is an EMERGENCY). We use a non-verbal signal to minimize disruptions.

S Social Studies/Science: We alternate between Social Studies and Science units. Please check your child’s FISH folder for project and test announcements. Signed Papers will be sent home every Wednesday. Please review and initial the papers, and return the entire packet the next day. Standards-Based Report Card: We will implement the new report card this year.

T Tardies: The tardy bell rings at 8:30 a.m. Any student arriving after that time must report to the office with a parent before going to the classroom. Leaving school early is considered a tardy. Transportation: Notes are REQUIRED for transportation changes. If you have an emergency change, please notify the office by 1:00 p.m. if at all possible.

U Unusual Circumstances: From time to time, there may be circumstances that could impact your child’s learning. Please let us know about anything that you feel could affect your child at school.

V Volunteers: Please consider volunteering at our school. There are many opportunities to get involved. If you plan to volunteer, please sign up for our PIE orientation/training.

W Water: Students are allowed to get water from the water fountain in the classroom as long as it doesn’t interrupt instruction and testing. –Only send in EMPTY water bottles for recess Written Excuse: Remember to send in a written excuse following an absence. All absences are considered unexcused without a written excuse. Website: Can be found on school website. http://teacherweb.com/GA/GreenbrierElementarySchool/JulieWilkins/apt7.aspx

X, Y, Z ZZZZZZZZ : Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep! A rested brain is a ready brain!

Before you go… Please take a moment and leave a note for your child! There are yellow sticky notes in the basket at each table.

I look forward to a fantastic year!
