1 GHANA 2010 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS PROGRESS REPORT AS AT 7 TH DECEMBER 2009

2 Cartographic field work in 157 out of the 170 districts has been completed Work is progressing smoothly in the remaining 13 districts 27,239 Enumeration Areas have been created Cartographic fieldwork is expected to be completed by end of December 2009 Census Cartographic Work

3 1.Draft Census Questionnaire has been prepared and tested 2.Manuals for Enumerators and Supervisors have been developed 3.Trainers Guide for training of field personnel has also been prepared Development of Census Instruments (Questionnaires & Manuals)

4 National Publicity and Education Committee has been constituted. The mandate of the committee is to undertake among others the following activities: i.Provide oversight and direction for the publicity and education of the Census ii.Coordinate and mobilize resources for the publicity and education of the Census at both the national and sub-national levels iii.Contribute to the development and dissemination of public information materials Publicity and Education

5 Publicity and Education Activities Media Sensitization workshops for selected Media Houses have taken place Inauguration of the District Census Implementation Committees for the Pilot Census Districts have been formed and inaugurated Interviews and Radio discussions have taken place in the national capital, Accra and the Pilot Census areas

6 Data Processing The Scanning Technology will be used to process the Census data. Evaluation of companies for the data processing has been completed Contract to be awarded by middle of December 2009. The company to process the data will be expected to provide: i.The equipment ii.The Soft ware iii.Training and capacity building iv.Formatting of questionnaires v.Printing the questionnaires vi.Storage and archiving

7 Use of funds Received from Government Funds received from Government in support of the Census programme have been used to: 1.Procure vehicles, computers and stationery 2. Recruit field personnel 3. Train the media, train trainers and field personnel 4.Pay allowances of cartographic and pilot census field personnel 5. Do publicity on the Census

8 Support from Development Partners The UNFPA has so far contributed Two Hundred and Twenty Six thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢226,530.00 ) to support the Census programme Other assistance received from the UNFPA includes four desktop Computers and one printer, one Laptop computer, 20 handheld GPS devices and other stationery Training and field materials for the Pilot Census including 6 LCD projectors with screens UNFPA has also donated a 4*4 Toyota Land-cruiser UNICEF has donated US$50,000 People’s Republic of China has donated 10 Dell Computers worth approximately $10,000.00

9 Support from other Dev’t Partners The following DPs have pledged to support the Census programme: The DFID £2.0 million. UNDP $150,000.00 DANIDA $200,00.00

10 Objectives of the Pilot Census To assess the adequacy of preparations being made for the effective execution of the 2010 Population and Housing Census To further test the Census instruments (Questionnaires & Manuals) and procedures To appraise the available IT technology

11 Status of the Pilot Census Training of Trainers workshop was carried out ( 4-11 October 2009) Training of Supervisors and Enumerators took place from19-30 October 2009 Pilot Census Night was Sunday, 8 th Nov. 2009 Pilot Census lasted for three weeks.
