2.  We have been discussing the “Clash of Cultures” between white settlers and Native Americans in the post-Civil War West for the past few weeks.  Major questions arose as to how to deal with the “Indian question” as settlers moved west.  One man, Richard Henry Pratt, developed the idea of “civilizing” the Native American children in schools such as the one he ran in Carlisle, PA. He called it “killing the Indian, saving the man.”  Your job will be to analyze and evaluate this school movement.

7.  Your task is to investigate the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and its impact on Native American Culture.  Your research will focus on primary sources. 8.  You will identify and evaluate the objectives of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and Indian Boarding Schools like it.  Analyze the impact of Indian Boarding Schools on Native American culture.  Things to Remember:  Your final product should tell the story of the Carlisle Indian School  Your final product should also place the Indian School within the larger context of the “clash of cultures” in American in the late 19 th century.  Think about how this fits with the themes of continuity/change and conflict/compromise in American History.
