French and Indian War France or England – world power? 1750-1760’s – the war is fought French building forts and making alliances (unions) with the Native Americans Colonists were getting little help from Britain Britain send General Edward Braddock to the Americas as commander in chief (Washington was an aide) Started by marching on Fort Duquesne French and Indian allies ambushed them with guerilla tactics Braddock dies; Washington leads the group back to Virginia

The Seven Years War The Seven Years War - Britain allies with Prussia against French and Native Americans Prussia fights France in Europe Britain fights France in the Caribbean, India, and Americas Britain suffered heavy losses in America at first William Pitt – English Secretary of State then Prime Minister Oversaw the war from London (skilled military planner) Promised Britain would pay for the war in the Americas As a result of high debt, he taxed the colonists more Americans were the least taxed people in the world at the time. Sent Jeffery Amherst and James Wolfe to command Recaptured Louisbourg (The French port rival to Boston) Conquered Fort Duquesne, and renamed Fort Pitt

No “New France” 1759 - The Battle of Quebec (Quebec – capital of New France) James Wolfe’s troops found an entrance to the city on a cliff British defeated the French on the Plains of Abraham James Wolfe and Marquis de Montcalm died in the attack Also, Amherst captured Montreal the next year 1763 - The Treat of Paris – the end of the war France allowed to keep some lands Forfeited most of Canada and land East of the Mississippi River Spain received the Louisiana Territory (including New Orleans)

Oh… There are Other People… The British did not have the same respect for the Natives Raised prices on goods, didn’t pay for land usage, taking land Pontiac’s War – alliance of Native Americans vs. Colonies Pontiac – chief of the Ottawa village Tried to establish a Native American alliance Attacked the British fort at Detroit, Killed frontier settlers Failed to capture the strongholds at Niagara, Fort Pitt, and Detroit War ends when British defeat the Shawnee and Delaware tribes Pontiac was pardoned when he signed a peace treaty
