British and French and the Embargo -In 1803, King George III (Great Britain) and Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (France) were officially at war. -The United States continued to trade with both nations because they were neutral. -Yet both France and Britain wanted to weaken their enemies. They seized U.S. ships to hurt each others foreign trade. -Britain also began to impress US sailors. What is impressment? Practice of seizing sailors for one own navy.

Native Americans As the US population began to move out west: -Ohio becomes a state in 1803. -Disease and war decrease Native American populations…. -…which pushes many peaceful tribes to war against the United States.

Tecumseh v United States Tecumseh was a Shawnee leader in the Native American resistance. -In 1805, he began preaching to preserve Native American ways and restore their homelands by force. -The US responded by sending an army to fight Tecumseh. -Although Tecumseh would lose the Battle of Tippecanoe, Tecumseh and his warriors would continue to fight the US in the next several years.
