US HISTORY SLIDES FROM 10/7!

U.S. History Wednesday, 10/7 How do we judge the past? Do Now!Agenda Which amendment do you value most? And why? (Get ready to share after the next slide!) Today-Friday: The Structured Controversy a.Today/Tomorrow: Research/Document Analysis b.Friday/BLOCK DAY: Go Time!

The Structured Controversy Winning Losing Understanding (through LISTENING!)

How a Structured Controversy Works 1.Two sides of a controversial question (Suspend your own beliefs!) 2.Partners prepare: Find evidence! 3.Present positions 1. A speaks, B listens and restates 2. B speaks, A listens and restates 4.Build a consensus

Etiquette for Effective Structured Controversies Be respectful of each other. Disagree with another person's position and ideas but don't be critical of the person. Don't take criticism of your ideas as a personal attack. Listen to everyone's ideas, especially if you don't agree with them. Change your mind when the evidence supports this. Try to understand both sides of the controversy. Understand the position differences before trying to reach consensus. Focus on reaching the best outcome, not on winning.

Assessment of the Structured Controversy 1.Teacher observation during preparation/discussion 2.*An individual written response answering the question, citing evidence 3.Self- and peer-assessment of performance

How would you describe this passage? What other info would you like about it? “I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is a physical difference between the two, which in my judgment will probably forever forbid their living together...I...am in favor of the race to which I belong, having the superior position.”

Structured Controversy #1 Was Lincoln a racist?

The SC Agenda 1.Today: Think-Aloud Guided Reading 1.Contextualize source 3.1 What is context? 2.Analyze source 3.1 Annotate/Find evidence as/after we read 2.Tomorrow: Continue Document Analysis 3.?Friday/Block Day: Present Positions
