Mr. Briggs’ English Three Class :: Parents please read class syllabus! To access Mr. Briggs’ class syllabus go to the RHS web site (riponhigh.net) Mr. Briggs’English 1 Class - Ripon High School - English Department - 2015-16 Course Syllabus apply knowledge of word origins to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading. read and understand grade level materials. read and understand historically significant literature. write coherent and focused essays. write with command of English conventions. deliver polished formal and extemporaneous group and individual presentations. Literature and Language Arts The primary anthology used in the Junior English course is Literature and Language Arts. Students will be issued a book for home use. These books are to remain at home as we have a set for the classroom. Some of the units of study are plot and setting, using primary and secondary sources, narrator and voice, different literary themes, irony and ambiguity, symbolism and allegory, poetry, biography, drama, motivation, and characterization. Literature - American Literature from the 18 th, 19 th, and 20 th Centuries. The Great Gatsby Short stories, vignettes, poetry, informational texts and technical writing Drama: A Raisin in the Sun One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Catcher In the Rye Class information Make-up - Students who are absent (sick, pre-arranged absences - not suspensions) are expected to make-up their missed assignments and tests within 2 school days of the student’s return. Students are encouraged to communicate with the teacher through email. Class time will not be used to complete make-up work or answer questions concerning make-up assignments. Students should see the teacher before/after class or school for assistance. Suspension - Maintaining attendance through proper behavior is essential for educational growth and success. Students who are suspended from school (home suspension) will not receive credit for assignments, projects, or class work that is due during the period of suspension. If a student is suspended in the school’s in-school suspension program, the student may receive make-up credit. However, the student must contact the teacher prior to the suspension to receive make-up credit and the day’s assignments. It is still the student’s responsibility to keep up with the missing work, lectures, and information that is presented during the student’s suspension. Cheating - Students’work must be original, and those who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment and will not be allowed make-up credit. The teacher will also make parental contact. Cheating will result in a class suspension and a disciplinary referral. Unless otherwise stated by the teacher, students should assume all of their work is to be done individually. The school’s Honor Code Policy will be strictly enforced at all times. If you have questions, refer to the RHS student handbook. Tardy Policy - The school’s tardy policy will be strictly enforced. Beginning on Monday, August 17, 2015 all students must be in their assigned seats and ready to learn when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in a tardy. For additional information about RHS’s tardy policy, refer to the student handbook. (Remember, you have a limited amount of time between classes.) Behavioral Issues - Students must follow the teacher’s directions at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in a loss of credit and/or class suspension. If this happens, make-up credit will not be issued. Aloss of credit during a major exam can adversely affect a student’s quarter or semester grade and even graduation eligibility. Deadlines - There will be numerous assignments and several projects assigned each quarter. Areasonable deadline will be given for completion of a student’s work and must be met to receive full credit. In certain cases, the teacher reserves the right to extend a deadline - on an individual basis. As a rule, the teacher does not accept late assignments. Cell Phones/Tablets – With the teacher’s permission, cell phones and tablets may be used for educational activities in the classroom. However, they must never be used in a disruptive manner – i.e. texting during class. Failure to follow the teacher’s instructions will result in a detention and/or a disciplinary referral. Computers / Internet - Computers and the Internet shall be used for research and educational purposes. Students may not play games or interact in any activity that is not directly related to the given assignment. Failure to comply with this rule will result in loss of computer time and credit for that assignment. If there are continuing problems, the student will be suspended from class and given a disciplinary referral. The RUSD/DPJPAtechnology agreement will be strictly enforced. Grade Scale - Assignment criteria or a related assessment rubric will be given at the time an assignment is made. All parents have access to the teacher’s grade book for their child. If you have questions about accessing your ARIES account, please contact the counseling department. Students are required to keep their returned papers in the English 1 section of their binders. If they are absent when papers are returned, they need to collect them from the returned paper bin. Grades will be entered into ARIES on a timely basis (usually updated daily). Due to large classes, some projects (essays) will require additional grading time. Needed Materials - Teacher does not have the resources to supply materials Binder (or division within a large binder) to keep notes, handouts, syllabus, and returned papers Binder paper, pens, glue stick, colored pencils and (thin) pens, personal sharpener and stapler RHS student handbook for calendaring all class-homework assignments and announcements Home access to a computer / printer connected to the Internet (If this is not possible, students may use computers in our school library, the city library or the classroom after school.) However, deadlines must still be met. Classroom Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Students are expected to treat others with courtesy and respect. Students are expected to be in their seats with all needed materials when the bell rings. Failure to comply will result in a tardy. Students are required to follow the teacher’s directions at all times. Hats or hoods will not be worn in class. Students are not allowed to eat or drink in the classroom. Gum is never allowed. Water in a clear, re-sealable container is ok. Consequences 1. 2. 3. 4. Warning and/or student / teacher conference 2-day suspension from class without credit for assignments - possible disciplinary referral In the event of a serious infraction, the student will be sent immediately to the office. Students who choose to eat, chew gum, or drink beverages (other than water mentioned above) will receive a one or two hour detention (depending on the classroom) for the first and second offense. The third offense will result in a 2-day class suspension for defiance.
