Reflection Rate the rhetorical analysis assignment on the following areas, and explain your reason for each rating. 1. Difficulty 1-5 2. Fun level 1-5 3. Amount learned conceptually (Did you learn anything about rhetorical devices?) 1-5 4. Overall 1-5 5. If you could change one thing about this assignment, what would it be?

Why use them? Good writers use transitional phrases to connect two clauses or sentences in one way or the other.

Different Types: Adding information: These transitions are used when the following sentences adds to an idea that proceeds it. Ex. You must complete this essay by 5 p.m. In addition, you must do the exercises on page 47.

Different Types Showing a Contrast – These transitions are used when we are comparing two separate ideas. Ex. We wanted to leave by 8:00. However, Mike arrived too late.

Different Types Giving Examples – We use these transitions when we are enriching an idea of claim with evidence. Ex. I love fruit. In particular, I Iike bananas, pineapple, and berries.

Different Types Showing a Concession – We use these transitions when two ideas are opposite in nature or contradict each other in any way. Ex. I need to wear glasses. Nevertheless, I hate how I look in them.

Assignment (10 HW pts) Respond to the following ACT essay prompt using at least 4 transitional phrases: Recently, several English teachers have decided to teach a certain book to their classes that contains questionable material normally not allowed in schools, including poor language, sexuality, and violence. They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. Many parents, on the other hand, have objected to the use of this book in class, arguing that schools should only include books and topics that are acceptable to everyone, and that students are subjected to too many negative influences already through media outside of school. In your opinion, should these teachers be permitted to teach this questionable book to their students? In your essay, take a position on this question. You may write about either one of the two points of view given, or you may present a different point of view on this question. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Transitions Continue Showing a Similarity – We use these when a sentence or idea is a continuation of the idea preceding it. Ex. Math was hard for me in high school. Likewise, it is hard in college.

CTD Showing a Result – We use these for cause and effect relationships. Ex. Roger’s face was dirty, so Ms. Jones made him wash it.

CTD Explaining or Emphasizing – We use these when we want to call attention to a specific idea or object. E.g. The book store sells cards. In fact, the have the best selection of cards around.

Assignment Another ACT Writing Prompt!!!! - This time you can’t cry about the font being too small because I have a hand-out for you.

Exit Ticket Without your note sheet, what is one transition word that would fit in the blank: The bookstore sells cards. _________, they have the best selection of cards in town.
