Grocery Store Measures Door Gasket, Automatic Door Closers, and Strip Curtain Laboratory Testing

History Door Gaskets and Automatic Door Closers are included in EnergySmart Grocer Program; Strip Curtains are not. 40% of California’s Program. So far, over 4 miles of door gaskets have been installed in BPA’s Program. The Program claims 0 energy savings – anticipating results from more detailed M&V.

History (cont) RTF Subcommittee recommended lab testing in lieu of field testing to minimize the number of uncontrolled variables. After months of searching, one laboratory (Emerson Technologies) was found that could and would perform the desired testing. Emerson was contracted to conduct a literature search on door gasket energy savings and finalize testing plans (Phase 1).

Lab Testing Plans (cont) Door Gaskets 3 Cases: Low Temperature Walk-In, Medium Temperature Walk-In, Low Temperature Reach-In 3 Conditions: No Gasket, Typical Damaged Gasket, Fully Functional Gasket Strip Curtains 2 Cases: Low Temperature Walk-In, Medium Temperature Walk-In Automatic door opening of 4 minutes/2 hours. Compare to Fully Functional Gasket
