8 Frida Born July 6, 1907. She contracted Polio at the age of 6 which left her right leg much smaller and weaker than her left. Her father encouraged her to do sports, including soccer and wrestling, as therapy for her leg.

9 Frida To show her strong support for the Mexican Revolution, Frida later claims 1910 as the year of her birth. She wanted her birth to coincide with the year that modern Mexico came into being.

10 Frida In 1922, Frida attended the National Preparatory School in Mexico study with the intent to study medicine. There, Diego Rivera is working on a mural. Rivera was 21 years her senior.

12 Frida In 1925, is severely injured in a trolley accident from which she never fully recovers. During her recovery, she begins to paint. To the right you see El Accidente in which Frida depicts the accident. She also paints Self -Portrait Wearing a Velvet Dress

14 Frida In 1927, Frida joins the Communist League. In 1928, she and Diego Rivera begin dating. Rivera paints Frida in his work Ballad of the Revolution which is a mural at the Ministry of Education in Mexico. In this work, Frida is depicted distributing weapons for the “revolution”.

16 Frida In 1929 Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are married. In 1930, Kahlo and Rivera move to the USA – first San Francisco then Detroit, MI and finally NYC in 1933. This move inspires the following works – Frida and Diego Rivera and Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States. After Rivera commission to paint a mural at the Rockefeller center is rescinded, they return to Mexico.

19 Frida In 1934, Kahlo and Rivera separate due to Rivera’s affair with Kahlo’s sister. This affair causes an estrangement between Kahlo and Rivera though they remain friends. In 1937, still separated, Kahlo and Rivera reunite in the joint effort to provide shelter to Leon Trotsky who sought asylum in Mexico. Kahlo and Trotsky have a brief affair. In 1939, Kahlo and Rivera divorce inspiring The Two Fridas.

22 Frida In December of 1940, Kahlo and Rivera remarry. Leon Trotsky is assassinated in Mexico that same year. Over the next decade, Kahlo’s health begins to decline and she comes to rely on morphine for the constant pain she is in.

23 Frida In 1953, Frida’s work is exhibited in the Mexico City Gallery of Contemporary Art. She hosted the show from her bed. On July 13, 1954 Frida died of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot to the lung).
