INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND EECG established in 1993 Specializing mainly in Energy, CLIMATE CHANGE and Environment Projects- Has vast experience working with development agencies- multilateral banks, UN Agencies, regional blocks, African host governments, Utilities, NGOs and private sector entities. Have worked literally in all SADC countries Was actively involved in the last important recent CCS initiatives in Southern Africa

INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND First Major CCS workshop in 2007-organized EAST/Southern Africa CCS/CDM workshop Low level of awareness on CCS amongst Stakeholders Lack of capacity on CCS Information Gap on Storage Potential Coordinated Regional project on follow-up CCS initiative 2010 involving Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique - ADDRESSING Follow up on storage potential- atlas as SA Follow-up on a regulatory framework CCS Follow-up on Capture sites and technology Need for a Regional Forum in form of CCS-Network- keep interest on CCS going and updating on developments-targeting practitioners and also policy makers.

WHO IS TARGETED

ACTIVITIES Regional CCS Network Activities Facilitate sourcing of funding for projects and other regional activities Awareness Raising and Capacity Building Organize a yearly conferences and or workshops and Organise on-demand courses Produce a newsletter Information Sharing Distribute the newsletter Create a website Switchboard for information on other international CCS activities and offered courses Multinational Cooperation Facilitate scoping of Cooperative projects in the participating countries (e.g. Geological Storage Atlas, Harmonisation of regulations and standards)

GOVERNANCE - lessons on Considered other Regional Networks and Associations that have been successful e.g. SADC Organisations-politically supported agencies SAPP RERA FANRPAN- well resourced agents SAPIA –private sector oil SACTEN etc- centre of excellence initiatives BONWEC-high level support but ad hoc CCS Forum would be Registered as Pty Ltd, Foundation, Association or Network etc Managed by an Organizing/Management Committee through a Secretariat

POSSIBLE STRUCTURE When Members meet once a year for Annual general meeting Provides and sets the TORs, Objective and strategic direction of the network

POSSIBLE STRUCTURE Solicit membership and keep records Act as cost centre for grants provided and produce and manage accounts Work with advisory committee to facilitate production of Business Plan on what to do (say ) each 3 year period (e.g. what workshops will be done, what courses to be provided, potential studies, production of geological atlases etc)

POSSIBLE STRUCTURE Country technical teams are important for tackling technical issues (e.g. Geological storage potential atlas, harmonisation of the regulatory framework, cross boarder transportation and storage, long term liability) Working groups at regional level can be formed as necessary to tackle specific issues being tackled by the specific technical teams.

Where we are Botswana Innovation Hub had agreed at workshop to host CCS-Network Secretariat. Notes of brainstorming presented to BIH Constraints of resources- financing and staffing BIH preferred web based tech (information sharing) managed CCS-Network because of low staffing Not much progress to date

WHAT IS NEEDED Revive interest in stakeholders and establish secretariat Provide resources to Secretariat Leadership to be clear in terms of defining agenda Audience/impact for CCS-NETWORK products defined-regionally and nationally Who can support!
